Some candle designs are carefully planned. Others happen by accident.
This candle falls into the second category.
During the day, it looked elegant but fairly understated. Then I lit it in a dark room, and everything changed. The crystal-clear gel wax reflected every flicker of the flame, the black wax became rich and velvety, and the delicate red florals suddenly looked as though they were glowing beside the glass.
It was one of those rare candle-making moments where the finished candle exceeded every expectation.
The best part? It’s surprisingly simple to recreate.
Whether you’re making candles for your own home, your next craft show, or your candle business, this design delivers an upscale, boutique look that’s perfect for Halloween, gothic décor, romantic collections, or anyone who loves dramatic home fragrance.
Why This Candle Works
This design is built on contrast.
The transparent gel wax allows light to travel through the candle while the opaque black wax creates depth and drama. Add just a hint of red on the outside of the glass, and suddenly your eye is drawn exactly where you want it.
Instead of filling the candle with embeds, glitter, or botanicals, the interior stays beautifully clean. The result is sophisticated, modern, and much safer than placing decorative items inside the wax.
Sometimes less really is more.
Supplies You’ll Need

- Coco Apricot Wax

- HTP Wick
- Wick stickers
- Forbidden Cherry Fragrance oil
- Red floral decals or stickers for the outside of the glass
Everything needed to create this candle is available at Candlehaven.ca.
Step 1: Prepare Your Vessel
Start with a perfectly clean glass.
Any fingerprints, dust, or residue will become much more noticeable once the clear gel wax is poured.
Attach your wick securely to the center of the vessel using a wick sticker and make sure it remains perfectly straight.
Take your time here.
A crooked wick is far more noticeable in clear gel wax than in traditional container candles.
Step 2: Add the Red Floral Details
Before pouring any wax, apply your floral decals to the outside of the glass.
This gives you complete control over placement without worrying about damaging the candle later.
For the most elegant look:
- Keep one floral cluster on the front.
- Let it gently curve upward.
- Add only one or two matching sprigs beside the candle for styling.
The beauty comes from restraint.
Step 3: Melt the Gel Wax
Heat your clear gel wax slowly according to the manufacturer’s recommendations.
Avoid overheating.
Gel wax naturally produces a few tiny bubbles, and that’s exactly what we want.
Those delicate bubbles catch the candlelight beautifully without making the candle appear cloudy.
Step 4: Add Fragrance
Always follow the manufacturer’s recommended fragrance load.
Stir gently to avoid introducing unnecessary air bubbles.
Step 5: Pour the Bottom Gel Layer
Slowly pour the clear gel wax into your prepared vessel.
Pouring slowly helps reduce trapped air while maintaining beautiful clarity.
Leave enough room for your black wax layer on top.
The goal is for the gel wax to occupy most of the vessel, creating maximum transparency once the candle is lit.
Allow the gel to cool completely.
Patience here makes a huge difference.
Step 6: Prepare the Black Wax
While the gel cures, melt your container wax.
Add black wax dye gradually until you achieve a rich, deep black.
The darker the wax, the greater the contrast with the transparent gel below.
Add fragrance oil if desired and stir thoroughly.
Step 7: Pour the Black Layer
Once the gel layer has completely cooled, pour your black wax slowly over the top.
Because the gel has already cured, you’ll achieve a clean, professional separation between the two layers.
The black layer should be thick enough to create drama but still leave the majority of the vessel showcasing the clear gel beneath.
Step 8: Let the Candle Cure
Allow the candle to cool undisturbed.
Avoid moving it while the wax is setting.
Once fully cured, trim the wick to approximately ¼ inch before lighting.
The Magic Happens When It’s Lit
This is where the transformation begins.
During daylight, the candle has a clean, modern appearance.
But once the room darkens and the flame begins dancing, the entire design changes.
The gel wax becomes almost jewel-like.
The tiny bubbles sparkle.
The black wax appears luxurious and velvety.
The red florals seem richer and more vibrant simply because they’re illuminated by the warm glow inside the glass.
It’s the kind of candle that makes people stop mid-conversation and ask,
“Where did you buy that?”
Design Variations
Once you’ve mastered this technique, try experimenting with different colour combinations.
Some beautiful options include:
- Emerald green florals with black wax
- Purple florals for a gothic Halloween collection
- White florals for elegant weddings
- Gold botanical decals for Christmas
- Silver accents for winter collections
- Burgundy roses for Valentine’s Day
The basic construction remains exactly the same while the mood changes completely.
Tips for Professional Results
Keep the gel crystal clear.
Pour slowly and avoid unnecessary stirring.
Don’t overdo the bubbles.
A few tiny bubbles add realism and sparkle.
Too many will distract from the overall design.
Use quality decals.
Applying florals to the outside of the vessel creates a luxurious appearance without compromising candle safety.
Choose the correct wick.
Clear gel wax reflects everything.
A perfectly centered wick makes all the difference.
Style your product photos in low light.
This candle photographs beautifully once it’s lit.
A darker setting allows the gel wax to shine while creating a luxurious atmosphere that customers love.
Perfect for Selling
If you sell candles, this design has several advantages.
It photographs exceptionally well.
It looks expensive.
It’s suitable for multiple seasons with only minor colour changes.
Most importantly, it creates an emotional reaction.
People don’t just see it.
They imagine lighting it in their own home.
That’s exactly what helps handmade candles sell.
Final Thoughts
Some candle designs come together exactly as planned.
Others surprise you.
This was one of those happy surprises that reminds me why I love candle making.
The combination of crystal-clear gel wax, dramatic black wax, and delicate red florals creates something that feels luxurious without being complicated.
Sometimes all it takes is a flickering flame to reveal a candle’s true personality.
