Planning a wedding means paying attention to every detail, including your table décor. Floating candle wedding centerpieces remain one of the most elegant and timeless choices for receptions because they create a romantic glow without overwhelming the table.

The problem? Many store-bought floating candles burn out long before the dancing starts.

This DIY floating candle tutorial shows you how to create beautiful floating candles using high-quality candle making supplies so your centerpieces can shine throughout your wedding celebration. Even better, you can customize them with any fragrance from our collection of more than 125 fragrance oils to perfectly match your wedding theme.

Floating Candle Mold

Pillar Soy Wax

Cotton Wicks 35 Strand

First Dance Fragrance Oil

Additional Items

  • Tall cylinder vase
  • Fresh baby’s breath
  • Crystal vase filler (optional)

Cylinder vases and Crystal vase filler can be found at most dollar stores and adds a little sparkle to catch the light.

Step 1: Prepare Your Mold

Ensure your floating candle mold is clean and ready for use. Insert and secure your wick according to the mold instructions.

Step 2: Melt the Wax

Melt your pillar soy wax according to the manufacturer’s recommended pouring temperature.

Pillar wax is an excellent choice for floating candles because it creates a durable candle with a clean finish and excellent burn performance.

Step 3: Add Fragrance

Once the wax reaches the appropriate temperature, take the wax off the heat and then add your fragrance oil. Stir for at least two minutes to allow the fragrance oil to bind to the wax.

For weddings, I recommend First Dance Fragrance Oil. However, one of the biggest advantages of making your own floating candles is that you can choose from over 125 fragrance oils available at Candlehaven to create a truly personalized experience.

Step 4: Pour and Cure

Carefully pour the scented wax into your floating candle mold.

Allow the candle to cool completely before unmolding.

For best results, allow the candle to cure for 48-72 hours before use.

Step 5: Create Your Wedding Centerpiece

Fill a tall cylinder vase with water.

Add fresh florals to the water for a stunning wedding display. Roses, orchids, baby’s breath, and seasonal blooms work beautifully.

For extra sparkle, add crystal vase filler to the bottom of the vase before adding water.

Place your floating candle gently on the surface and light it just before guests arrive.
