Canada Day is the perfect opportunity to create a candle that celebrates our nation’s iconic red and white colours. This beautiful layered candle combines sparkling red gel wax, creamy white soy wax, and a unique heart accent to create a festive design that’s ideal for home décor, gifts, cottages, and holiday celebrations.
If you’re looking for a fun DIY candle making project, this Canada Day candle is surprisingly easy to create and can be customized with your favourite fragrance oils.
Supplies You’ll Need
Available at Candlehaven:
- Clear candle vessel
- Gel wax
- Soy container wax
- Cotton wick
- Wick sticker
- Wick centering device
- Fierce Red Wax Dye Chips
- Diamond Sparkle Dust (optional)
- Fragrance oil of your choice
- Pouring pitcher
- Thermometer
Step 1: Prepare Your Container
Secure your cotton wick to the center of the vessel using a wick sticker. Use a wick centering device to keep the wick perfectly straight while pouring.
A properly centered wick will help ensure an even burn and a professional-looking finished candle.
Step 2: Create the Red Gel Wax Layer
Melt your gel wax according to the manufacturer’s recommendations.
Once melted, add a small amount of Fierce Red Wax Dye Chips until you achieve a rich Canada Day red colour. For additional sparkle, stir in a small amount of Diamond Sparkle Dust.
Allow the gel wax to cool slightly before pouring to minimize bubbles.
Pour the gel wax into the vessel, filling approximately one-third to one-half of the container.
Allow the layer to cool completely before moving on to the next step.
Step 3: Pour the White Wax Layer
Melt your soy container wax and add your chosen fragrance oil according to the recommended usage rate.
Allow the wax to cool to the proper pouring temperature.
Slowly pour the white wax layer over the cooled red gel wax. Pour gently to maintain a clean separation between the two layers.
Allow the candle to cool completely.
Step 4: Add a Decorative Accent
For this Canada Day version, we used a red heart accent as a decorative centerpiece.
You can also personalize your candle with:
- Maple leaf embeds
- Red and white wax decorations
- Canada-themed embellishments
- Glitter accents
- Seasonal fragrance combinations
