Please don't.
Learning how much fragrance oil to use in candles is one of the fundamentals of candle making, and more fragrance oil does not automatically produce a stronger-smelling candle.
In fact, adding too much fragrance can create an entirely new collection of problems.
The right amount depends on your wax, fragrance oil, wick, vessel and the results of your own testing.

What Is Fragrance Load in Candle Making?
Fragrance load describes the amount of fragrance oil used in relation to your candle wax.
A common candle-making convention expresses fragrance load as a percentage of the weight of the wax.
For example:
100 g wax + 8 g fragrance oil = an 8% fragrance load
That does not mean fragrance makes up exactly 8% of the finished 108 g mixture.
This distinction causes an astonishing amount of candle-making confusion.
If you're following a supplier's instructions, recipe or online calculator, determine exactly how that source defines its percentage before doing your calculations.
For this guide, when we say 8% fragrance load, we mean:
8 g of fragrance oil for every 100 g of wax.

How Do You Calculate Fragrance Oil for Candles?
Here's the basic formula:
Wax weight × fragrance load = fragrance oil needed
Convert your desired percentage to a decimal first.
So:
6% = 0.06
7% = 0.07
8% = 0.08
9% = 0.09
10% = 0.10
Let's make a candle using 500 grams of wax at an 8% fragrance load.
500 × 0.08 = 40
You need:
500 g wax + 40 g fragrance oil
Your total mixture will weigh approximately 540 g.
That's it.
No advanced mathematics.
No sacrificial calculator.

The maximum appropriate percentage, however, depends on the wax and fragrance you're actually using.
That's why you shouldn't simply look at the 10% column and decide:

How Much Fragrance Oil Should You Use?
There is no universal percentage that works best for every candle.
A common starting range in candle making is around 6% to 8% fragrance load, provided the specifications for your particular wax and fragrance allow it. Your first authority should be the manufacturer's specifications for the wax you're using.
Then you test.
The goal isn't to cram the largest possible amount of fragrance into your candle.
The goal is to determine the amount that produces the best-performing finished candle.
That's a very different objective.
What Does Maximum Fragrance Load Mean?
Candle waxes have limits on how much fragrance they're designed to accommodate.
You'll often see this described as the wax's maximum fragrance load.
Think of that number as a formulation limit rather than a target.
If a wax allows up to 10% fragrance, that does not mean:
10% is automatically the ideal fragrance load.
It means you should not assume that exceeding the wax manufacturer's stated limit is appropriate.
Your candle may perform beautifully at a lower percentage.
In fact, using less fragrance while achieving excellent scent performance has a rather pleasant side effect for anyone selling candles:
It costs less.
Fragrance oil is one of the more significant variable costs in a scented candle.
Using more than you actually need isn't premium candle making.
It's expensive candle making.
Why More Fragrance Oil Doesn't Always Mean Stronger Candles
This may be the most commercially useful lesson in this entire article.
If your candle doesn't smell strong enough, the answer isn't automatically:

- fragrance oil
- wax
- fragrance load
- wick
- vessel
- candle size
- mixing process
- cure time
- burn conditions
Changing only the amount of fragrance may not solve the underlying problem.
Sometimes a candle with a lower fragrance load can perform better than one overloaded with fragrance because the entire formulation works better together.

What Happens If You Put Too Much Fragrance Oil in a Candle?
Exceeding what your wax can properly accommodate can contribute to problems such as:
- fragrance oil separating from the wax
- oily or sweating surfaces
- poor burning
- wick-performance problems
- smoking or soot
- inconsistent candles
And there's another problem:
You're wasting fragrance oil.
If an 8% formulation performs beautifully, moving to 10% merely because 10 is a bigger number doesn't necessarily improve your product.
It does, however, increase your fragrance cost by 25% compared with the amount used at 8%.
That matters enormously when you're making hundreds of candles.
Should Candle Fragrance Oil Be Measured by Weight or Volume?
Weight.
Use a digital scale.
Don't formulate your candles using teaspoons, tablespoons, droppers or the fluid-ounce markings on a measuring cup.
Different liquids can have different densities.
A fluid ounce is a measurement of volume.
An ounce on your scale is a measurement of weight.
Those aren't interchangeable simply because both inconveniently use the word "ounce."

If you're building your candle-making setup, a reliable digital scale is one of the least glamorous purchases you'll make.
It's also one of the smartest.
Grams or Ounces: Which Is Better for Candle Making?
You can formulate candles accurately using either weight system.
Personally, for fragrance calculations, grams make the arithmetic wonderfully simple.
Want 8% of 500 g?
40 g.
Want 7% of 1,000 g?
70 g.
The metric system occasionally wanders into the room and makes everyone else's life look unnecessarily complicated.
But if you prefer ounces, that's perfectly workable too.
Just remain consistent.
How Much Fragrance Oil for One Pound of Wax?
One pound contains 16 ounces.
Using fragrance as a percentage of wax weight:

How Much Fragrance Oil for 500 Grams of Wax?
For 500 g of wax:
6% = 30 g fragrance oil
7% = 35 g
8% = 40 g
9% = 45 g
10% = 50 g
So an 8% batch would contain:
500 g wax + 40 g fragrance oil = 540 g total mixture
How Much Fragrance Oil for a 200-Gram Candle?
Now we encounter another common source of confusion.
Do you mean:
200 g of wax?
Or:
a finished candle weighing 200 g including fragrance?
Those are different calculations.
If you mean 200 g of wax at 8%, calculate:
200 × 0.08 = 16
So you'd use:
200 g wax + 16 g fragrance = 216 g finished mixture
But if you want exactly 200 g of finished wax-and-fragrance mixture, you need a different calculation.
How to Calculate Fragrance for an Exact Finished Candle Weight
This is especially useful if you're making candles commercially.
Suppose you want your wax-and-fragrance mixture to total exactly 200 g and you're using an 8% fragrance load relative to wax weight.
Use:
Finished mixture weight ÷ 1.08 = wax weight
200 ÷ 1.08 = approximately 185.19 g wax
Then:
200 − 185.19 = approximately 14.81 g fragrance oil
So your batch becomes approximately:
185.19 g wax + 14.81 g fragrance = 200 g
This calculation becomes particularly valuable when you're making production batches and don't want a large amount of scented wax left in the pouring pitcher.
How to Calculate Fragrance Oil for Multiple Candles
Let's say you're producing 12 candles, and each requires 200 g of finished wax-and-fragrance mixture.
12 × 200 = 2,400 g total mixture
At an 8% fragrance load:
2,400 ÷ 1.08 = approximately 2,222.22 g wax
Then:
2,400 − 2,222.22 = approximately 177.78 g fragrance oil
Your batch is therefore approximately:
2,222.22 g wax
plus
177.78 g fragrance oil
for
2,400 g total scented wax mixture
For production, you'd normally allow a small practical margin for material left behind in equipment rather than assuming every last molecule will politely leave the pouring pitcher.
Wax has other plans.
Fragrance Load vs. Fragrance Content
This distinction deserves its own section.
Suppose you combine:
100 g wax + 10 g fragrance
That is a 10% fragrance load relative to the wax weight.
But the finished mixture weighs 110 g.
The fragrance therefore represents about 9.09% of the total finished mixture.
Those are two mathematically different percentages.
This is why two online candle calculators can appear to disagree while both calculations are mathematically valid.
They may be answering different questions.
Before using any calculator or recipe, determine whether its percentage refers to:
fragrance relative to wax weight
or
fragrance relative to total finished weight.
For consistency throughout your own candle business, choose a convention and document it.
Does Every Fragrance Oil Perform the Same at the Same Percentage?
No.
And this is where candle making becomes more interesting than a spreadsheet.
Two fragrance oils used at exactly 8% in exactly the same wax can produce different scent experiences.
One may seem extremely powerful.
Another may feel more subtle.
That's because fragrance oils are complex formulations with different aromatic materials and characteristics.
You don't need to "fix" every lighter fragrance by automatically pouring more into the wax.
Evaluate the finished candle first.

What Is Cold Throw?
Cold throw describes how your candle smells when it isn't burning.
Pick up an unlit candle.
Smell it.
That's the experience we're talking about.
Cold throw matters enormously for candles sold in physical stores and markets because it's often the customer's first encounter with the fragrance.
But a candle with impressive cold throw isn't necessarily guaranteed to have equally impressive hot throw.
Which brings us to...
What Is Hot Throw?
Hot throw refers to the fragrance experience while the candle is burning.
For many candle makers, this is the ultimate goal.
You want the fragrance to become noticeable in the surrounding space without the candle behaving poorly.
Hot throw can be affected by the interaction between wax, fragrance, wick and the overall candle formulation.
This is why fragrance load can't be optimized in isolation.
Does Wick Size Affect Scent Throw?
It can influence the candle's overall burning behaviour, which in turn affects the way fragrance is experienced.
The wick helps determine how your candle consumes fuel and develops its melt pool.
An improperly wicked candle can therefore complicate fragrance testing.

Does Wax Affect Fragrance Load?
Absolutely.
Different wax formulations have different manufacturer specifications and recommended fragrance limits.
This is one reason you should never take a formula developed for one wax and blindly apply it to another.

A freshly poured candle isn't necessarily representative of the fragrance experience you'll get after the candle has rested.
Recommended cure times vary with wax and formulation.
Follow the guidance for the wax you're using and keep your testing process consistent.
If candle A is tested the next morning and candle B is tested after a much longer cure, you're no longer making a particularly useful comparison.
Consistency makes your test results meaningful.
How Do You Make a Candle Smell Stronger?
Before increasing fragrance load, troubleshoot systematically.
Ask:
Am I using a fragrance designed for candle making?
Is the fragrance load within the wax manufacturer's recommendations?
Am I weighing accurately?
Am I following the wax manufacturer's processing recommendations?
Has the candle had an appropriate cure?
Is the candle properly wicked?
Is the vessel appropriate?
Have I actually burn-tested this formulation?
Then change one variable at a time.
This last part is important.
If you change the wick, fragrance percentage, pour temperature and cure time simultaneously and the next candle performs beautifully, congratulations.
You now have absolutely no idea which change fixed it.
Scientific method: considerably less glamorous than candle photography, considerably more useful.
Fragrance Oil vs. Essential Oil in Candles
Fragrance oils and essential oils aren't automatically interchangeable.
A product being natural, aromatic or lovely-smelling doesn't automatically mean it's suitable for burning in a candle.
Use fragrance materials specifically identified as appropriate for your candle application and follow the supplier's documentation and usage guidance.

Start with the specifications for your wax.

- wick

Why Fragrance Load Matters for a Candle Business
If you're making one candle for yourself, accidentally using a few extra grams of fragrance isn't going to bankrupt you.
Scale changes the equation.
Imagine your formula unnecessarily uses an extra 10 g of fragrance per candle.
Make 10 candles and that's 100 g.
Make 100 and it's 1 kilogram.
Make 1,000 and you've unnecessarily consumed 10 kilograms of fragrance oil.
This is why professional formulation isn't about making candles as cheaply as possible.
It's about using the amount of each ingredient that actually contributes to the product.
More isn't automatically better.
Optimized is better.
Keep a Fragrance Testing Record
For every candle formulation, record:
- wax
- wax weight
- fragrance oil
- fragrance weight
- fragrance load
- wick series and size
- vessel
- dye or other formulation variables
- pour date
- cure time
- cold-throw observations
- hot-throw observations
- burn-test results
Eventually you build a fragrance library based on your actual products.
That's far more useful than remembering:
"I think I used about this much last time."
